How to Book Wineries

The insider protocol for securing reservations, planning distances, and avoiding the dreaded closed-gate heartbreak in Mendoza wine country.

In one line: Mendoza wineries are not drop-in tasting rooms: reservations are mandatory, top estates sell out 2 to 3 months ahead, and the golden limit is strictly two wineries per day.

The Golden Rules of Mendoza Wine Planning

Visiting wineries in Mendoza is a world apart from Napa or Bordeaux. Most bodegas operate security gates with guest lists, requiring prior reservations for tastings and multi-course lunches. Showing up unannounced almost always ends in disappointment.

  1. Maximum Two Wineries Per Day: This is the golden law of Mendoza touring. A proper Argentine winery lunch lasts 2.5 to 3.5 hours with multiple pours. Fitting a third or fourth estate causes rush, sensory fatigue, and road stress.
  2. Reserve Top Names 60 to 90 Days in Advance: Catena Zapata, Zuccardi's Piedra Infinita restaurant, and El Enemigo (Casa Vigil) book out 2 to 3 months ahead for English and Spanish slots, especially during peak harvest season (February–April) and October spring.
  3. Cluster by Sub-Region: Never book a morning tasting in Luján de Cuyo and a 1:00 PM lunch in the Uco Valley. The transfer takes 70 to 90 minutes. Dedicate one entire day to Luján, one day to Uco Valley, and an optional half-day to Maipú.
  4. Beware of Sundays and Mondays: Many boutique and historic bodegas close their tourism doors on Sundays or Mondays. Check schedules before locking in flights.

How to Actually Get Between Wineries

Transportation is the linchpin of your wine vacation. Remember: Argentina enforces strict zero-tolerance drink driving laws (0.0% BAC), and police sobriety checkpoints along provincial routes 7, 40, and 82 are standard in the late afternoon.

Your primary options:

  • Private Driver (Remis): The best balance of flexibility and cost for independent couples and small groups ($100–$130/day in Luján; $150–$180/day in Uco Valley). Your driver waits during tastings. Check our comprehensive Transport & Taxi Guide for details.
  • Curated Small-Group Tour: Ideal if you don't want to coordinate emails, deposits, and timings. All winery reservations, tasting fees, and multi-course meals are included.
  • Never Rely on Uber Outside the City: While Uber gets you to a winery, drivers rarely accept pickups in remote vineyard lanes of Agrelo or Tunuyán.
